As the institution of official statistics in the federated state of Bremen the Statistical Office provides a lot of data about the social and economic situation in the smallest federated state of Germany. The Statistical Office doesn't understand itself as a bureaucratic authority, but as a modern service institution. The Statistical Office of Bremen was founded in the year 1850 by the Senate of Bremen as "Bureau for Commercial Statistics" on initiative of the chamber of commerce. In 1867, after the unification with the "Provisional Bureau for the general statistics of State and City", which was created in 1861, it was renamed to "Bureau für bremische Statistik". Since 1921 it is named "Statistisches Landesamt Bremen". Its most famous director was Dr. Wilhelm Böhmert, head since 1900, a national and international renowned statistician, who was dismissed without notice in 1933 by the nazi government. In the first decades of its existence the office was settled in the building "Schütting", in 1908 the stock exchange is mentioned as its location. In the night of the 18th to the 19th August of 1944 its location for many years at 37 Herdentorsteinweg was destroyed completely by an allied air attack, record and book stocks had been eliminated totally. In 1950 the office returned into the restructured building at Herdentorsteinweg, since 1966 it is located at the present address 14-16 An der Weide.

Justice and law

The most important legal elements for the activities of the office are the Law on Statistics for Federal Purposes and the Bremen State Statistics Law. In this law also the tasks of our office are committed. According to that the office is responsible for the implementation of more than 200 statistics which had been given in order by the European Union or by a federal or state law, and to publish and describe the results.
Its essential tasks are furthermore to advice und support the authorities of the state in statistical matters, to run a statistical data base, to carry out National Accounting, social-economic surveys as well as forecasting and model calculations.
Simultaneously the office serves the function of a city statistical office of the municipality of Bremen, such as to operate investigations to city development and city research, to administrate the "Small area relation system" and to keep the official street register. Finally it is as election office responsible for the preparation, implementation and evaluation of the elections in the municipality of Bremen.

Partner in cooperation

The Statistical Office of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen works closely together with its partners in the "statistical cooperation" which is constituted by the Statistical Offices of the 16 federated states and the Federal Statistical Office of Germany in Wiesbaden. In general Statistical Offices of the federated states gather data and publish state results, the Federal Office summarizes the results of the states to the federal result.
